A Little About Me

People who are reading this blog may be wondering about the author, me. So I guess I should write a post about me right?

Two years ago I was asked to be a bridesmaid in a wedding. The bride also invited me to join "WeddingBook" on facebook. So I did. Having never been in a wedding before, I didn't know much about what they were all about but I was interested. This is where stalking the WB forums comes in. These brides over-share about everything! Almost all of them use their full REAL names on this very PUBLIC forum! You can google someone's name and read all of the posts they have written on WB! Sometimes I wonder if the girls that really fight with everyone or the girls that get picked on all of the time ever have problems with the other girls tracking them down and harassing them. I would be scared that something I posted could be taken as offensive and before I knew it a gang of stressed out crazy brides would be at my door to beat me up and throw my computer out the window! I'm serious. Some of the WBers seem to really hate each other. Most of the WBers seem pretty laid back though. So if you use WB continue using it so I can continue to forum stalk.

So needless to say I do use facebook, but I never post on WB! However, I do read WB a lot! It is addicting like a reality TV show. You get to know people who post a lot, even though they have no idea you exist. Then you keep coming back to watch the main "characters." It is hard to remember they are actually real people sometimes. I also really like looking at all of the wedding ideas, but I'm not even engaged yet!

So why the blog? Well like I said before I don't post on WB. Instead, I just read it. So sometimes I want to comment on a post or chat with others about it anonymously, even though sometimes I think a blog is too public too. I also think some of the ideas are great and should be viewed by more than just people who have facebook. Plus, I feel weird sharing all of these wedding ideas with my friends because I am not even close to getting engaged. It is embarrassing how into weddings I am.Hence the blog.

Parade Rained On OR Just Bragging?

Hey WB fans!

Just saw this post today and had to share. This WBer feels like everyone with a smaller budget than her is raining on her parade. Some background: This WBer also started a post to share/compare the size and price of WBers engagement rings...

You guessed it! This thread blew up and after 126 posts the moderators shut it down. Read the thread HERE. Since the topic is closed you can continue the conversation here in the comments of this post.

The original post reads:

... but I really need to get this off my chest.
I'm noticing a lot that when women talk about how their E-rings were expensive, or that their budget is kind of high, they're being ridiculed for it.  People say things like "I can't believe you're spending so much on something so silly and impractical" or "That's stupid" and the like.  For example, a gf of mine asked how much my ring was and i told her, that it's somewhere in the ball park of $8000.  Her eyes got really big, and she said "Oh my god.  What in the world are you spending on the wedding?"  I told her we budgeted around $25-30,000.  The next response was "That's so ridiculous ... you can have a wedding for so much less than that."  I don't understand the double standard.  This same girlfriend has a wedding budget of $5000.  I would be ridiculed for being insensitive, materialistic, rude, and condescending (amongst other things) if I told her "There's no way you could have an elegant wedding on just $5000, are you crazy?"  or something similar.
So my questions to you are:
Have any of you with larger budgets or more expensive engagement rings run into this same thing?
How have you responded?
Why do you think girls with smaller budgets and less elaborate rings are raining on our parade?
Why is this behavior acceptable?  And why is it completely unacceptable in the other direction?

EDIT: This is not a process thread.  I'm referencing things I've experienced in person, not on FB.

Chime In: How would you answer this WBers questions? What do you think this WBer is all about? Is she trying to just brag about her wedding and throw numbers around? Is she trying to figure out which WBers she wants to be friends with based on their wedding budget opinions?

Reception Table Names

Yesterday someone on WB started a thread about creative table names, instead of just numbering them.

OP: Other than numbering the guest tables... what are some other ways you are organizing your tables! I hear things like pet names, states, pictures...

 Replies:
  • We are either going to do places that are special to us or names of Nascar speedways (since we are avid race fans and he races at our local track)
  • The words Love or Marriage in different  languages. Or words that are based on love/marriage eg. forever, happiness. always, future, hope, everlasting etc
  • We are using song titles that will be for sure played throughout the night - songs that we love or have some sort of meaning to us.
  • We also did song titles, and since we had a buffet the dj played clips from the songs to dismiss the tables.  The dj picked out all the song titles (all love songs) so we didn't have to do that work
  • i heard of someone doing famous composers once
  • We are getting married in the Adirondack Park here in New York State (upstate in the mountains not NYC) and we are going to use the name of some of the high peaks.
  • Our wedding is a wine theme and I considered different wine but I'm going with numbers.
  • were thinking of doing places/dates that we've been on then at the table will have a little story about it... for example one table name will be "Castle Fun Park" then at the table it will have in big letters "Castle Fun Park" then a little blurb underneath it explaining how that was the place we went mini golfing at for our first date. special places like that.
  • we are huge baseball fans so we are using the names of different baseball parks for table names

Chime In: Have you ever been to a wedding that didn't have conventional table names/numbers? Are you having creative table names at your wedding? Do you have any ideas to add?

Chime In: What do you think about a bride wearing black on her wedding day? Would you were black on your wedding day? Have/are you going to? Do you know anyone who has?
